Brad Elwood commits to the Charlotte 49ers!
Piedmont High School standout, Brad Elwood (2011), recently announced his verbal commitment to the Charlotte 49ers!  Elwood is a left-handed hitting prospect that possesses plus speed and a very mature offensive game.  He is also a solid defender up the middle of the field whether he is at SS or tracking dpwn balls in the outfield.  He is also a phenomenal student and teammate.  Elwood will be competing with the 2011 On Deck O's-Black this summer and fall.  Congratulations to the 49ers and the Elwood family!

2011 LHP Ryan Cliff

ryan_cliff2011 LHP Ryan Cliff

Ryan Cliff (5’10/180) is currently a junior at Hickory Grove Baptist Christian in Charlotte, NC for Head Coach Ronnie Bost.  He played his freshman year at Central Cabarrus where he was awarded the JV Cy Young Pitcher of the Year award in 2008.  Ryan joined HGBC for his sophomore year (2009).  He earned a starting pitchers role in a 3 man rotation while also playing 1st base. He helped contribute to a team 16-6 record and a regular season conference championship, as well as a runner-up finish in the end of season tournament.  He made 10 appearances and had 42 innings pitched, 35K, 7BB, 3.2 ERA and 10 pick offs.

Summer and Fall 2009, Ryan played with the Carolina Gators 18U Showcase team run by Marty Reid and coached by David Lee.  After a successful fall season, Coach David Lee provided the following evaluation.

"Great work this fall, very consistent every time on the mound.  Grading Scale: FB: 50, CB:50, CH:50, Overall control: 50, Poise: 60, Aggressiveness: 50, Agility:40, Make-up: 60, Physical Strength: 50, Arm Strength: 50, Delivery 50.  (Not sure if this scale is universal, but this is a 20-80 scale and they have 50 being "Above average, will compete right away/possible starter, and 60 reading very good; everyday player/starting pitcher.

Ryan has the ability to be very efficient, and therefore, typically, pitches deep into games.  He is a strike thrower that has command of three pitches (FB, CB, and CH).  His FB is not overpowering (currently 81-82 mph), but there is more in the tank.   Ryan is also a very good student with a 3.9 GPA.

2011 Austin Hicks shows promise as Position Player and Pitcher

2011, 6’ 3” 160lb Pitching and Hitting Prospect Austin Hicks is a guy who is an athletic 1st baseman who can also pitch. He has a tall skinny frame that will definitely hold more weight as he continues to lift and develop physically. He is a line drive gap to gap type hitter who will hit for more power as he continues to get stronger. He also shows a big upside on the mound where he possesses a low 80’s fastball that he can fill up the zone with and has worked hard this summer on his off speed pitches that seem to get better with every start. He still has more velocity in there with his tall slender frame that he will continue to work hard on throughout the year. Austin is an athletic kid who plays 3rd/1st/P in addition to being a very good basketball player where he was named captain for Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill SC. Austin is also an academically gifted kid who shows a lot of promise on the field and has the good grades to go with it. You can find Austin playing this Fall for the 2011 On Deck O’s Orange Team.

2011 Left Handed Hitting Catcher Jacob Rand shows versatilty

rand2011 5ft 9in 150lb Jacob Rand is a left handed hitting Catcher/MINF that you have to have on a team with his versatility and love for the game. His primary position is Catcher where he is a great receiver/blocker and very good catch and throw guy. His quick feet allow him to have POP times around 2.0-2.1 and very accurate with his throws. He is a good fundamentally sound line drive hitter who uses the whole field to hit in and has great instincts and feel for the game as shown by the way he leads behind the plate. He has average arm strength and runs around a 7.3 60yd dash but has surprising 1st step quickness which allows him to play 2nd base or outfield when needed. He is a true gamer that loves to play the game but will not blow you away with his physical tools but coach’s will love him being on a club. Jacob is an outstanding student athlete at Parkwood High School and will continue his development this Fall with the 2011 On Deck O’s Orange Team.
